—an excerpt from “The Trees” by Philip Larkin

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread, . . .

Philip Larkin

Larkin’s words make me wonder if friends who’ve recently suffered and died have come into leaf, have relaxed and spread out in the glories of heaven.

They touch me personally, as a picture for the new life and peace I feel in the moments I am able to rest in the faith that it is the Lord Who gives and takes away.

In Larkin’s description of Spring growth, I recall the joys of watching children expand into new skills and insights.

I remember the fulfillment that comes when the Holy Spirit births His gifts and service—in both myself and others.

And finally, Larkin’s metaphor brings to mind the happy surprises inside conversations that create and build and the sigh of grateful release when trust grows and friendships unexpectedly begin to blossom into love.
