Do you wonder if “stuff” communicates? Not talking nutcrackers, teddy bears, or Disney fantasies, but real rocks talking to actual water, mountains talking to the moon, fire talking to the stuff that fuels it or plants communicating with the soil. This picture stirred me to wonder if the tree and the sun might communicate with each other. Am I kooky? Over imaginative?
Might the rocks know their Creator?
As Jesus made his way to Jerusalem during the week before His crucifixion, the Pharisees rebuked Him. He replied that if His disciples were silent about Him,
The stones along the road would burst into cheers. Luke 19:40
Was He speaking in a metaphor or alluding to a hidden truth? And if, as St. Paul said,
. . . the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. Romans 8:22
And if this groaning is for the rule of God’s love, and if, as the word of God repeatedly affirms, God is Love, and if Love is the Creator of the entire universe, and if, as St. Augustine and many others have said, “Love is the cosmic glue that holds the world together.” Then might not the centuries old ancient primal forests have held long leisurely loving conversations with the sun? Certainly Scripture says that the natural world recognizes its Creator. Or was Isaiah speaking metaphorically when he wrote of nature rejoicing in God’s will for His people’s exile to end?
For you shall go out with joy, And be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills Shall break forth into singing before you, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12 NKJV
So I wonder, if the natural vegetable and mineral worlds have a sense of God, what hidden links might they have of each other? Does all created matter wait for God’s loving resolution, harmony and unity? It bears repeating that Scripture says it does.
The creation waits in eager expectation for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until the present time.
Romans 5: 19-22 Berean Bible
What rich incentive to care for the natural world we live in!
