Who Has Seen the Wind?

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

Christina Rosetti

Almost seventy years ago, I walked into a 7th grade class room at Budlong School in Chicago, sat at my desk, and before the final bell rang began to copy this poem from the blackboard for Morning Penmanship Practice. I loved it; it stuck and quickly came to mind for this watercolor.

I’m grateful to Christina Rossetti, and to my teacher, Mrs. Lieberman, for poems to grow into. Lately, still growing I hope, I’ve been trying to paint the wind— Jesus’ metaphor for the Holy Spirit.  Where does He come from? Where does He go? And will we bow down our heads to Him and  tremble at His presence and let Him blow in and through us as He will?

Thank you, Lilli, We should both be able to relate — with all the Michigan winds we’ve had lately.

I especially like the poem “The Wind Doth Blow”. Your paintings are always interesting to me. When we have some comfortable temperatures again and all feel safe, perhaps we could think about meeting with distancing again. There was a gathering at Bethel last week outside with around 25 – 30 people, but I was told you had to walk around to each person seated in a lawn chair to talk with them so that was too many to do it comfortably.
