There is in souls a sympathy with sounds;

And as the mind is pitch’d the ear is pleased
With melting airs, or martial, brisk, or grave:
Some chord in unison with what we hear,
Is touched within us, and the heart replies.
—William Cowper, 1731-1800

Sometimes a picture, like this one, will pitch my mind toward music. It  awakens a desire to dabble at the piano, to play with the pedaling, to seek for shapes in simple sounds and chords that might momentarily correspond to the arrangement of images on the printed page. Then I might begin to better understand and put into words what this quiet image touches within my heart.
