Knowing God through His Word — Part 10

A Series of Essays to Encourage, Inform and offer Study Helps

Let’s reflect on the seed power in God’s Word. Seeds are amazing. Perhaps that’s why Jesus used the metaphor. Seeds carry life within themselves. They are actually plant embryos designed to survive within in a protective covering. Each seed develops after its own kind. There are good seeds and bad seeds.

Seeds can grow into strong healthy plants or produce weakly plants with stunted growth. By looking at a seed it is often difficult to tell from its size and shape if it will grow into a strong tree, a tiny flower or an aromatic healing herb. Seeds can grow into plants good for food or beauty or into unwanted thistle or toxins.

In Matthew 13, the Parable of the Sower, Jesus compares God’s Word to good seed. It is alive. It is designed to be planted within us and to grow. He said

He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.
Matthew 13:37-38

Jesus also compared faith to a seed.

If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
Matthew 17:20

Living faith, like a small mustard seed has great power. Jesus used the same image to describe the Kingdom of God.

He said, “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes   greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.”
Mark 4:30-32

Christians are born again

. . . not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever. . .
1 Peter 1:23

Jesus said that if His word lived in us, and we lived in His word, then we would be His disciples and God’s would answer prayers. See John 8:31 and 15:17

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17

Thinking about God’s word as seed motivates me to spend more time in the word. I hope it does that for you, too.
